Singers / songwriters wanted for recording and photographic portrait project

The management meetings at the Battle Rock Motel aren’t the lengthy tea and Kit-Kat marathons littered with chit chat that they used to be. Instead, the boss usually turns up late, quickly mutters something about the pool filter and the price of eggs, and then disappears straight off again into the Bunker – the home of Battle Rock Records.

Well, today’s meeting was different and we’re to tell all our guests about it. For today the boss not only turned up on time, but he stayed for about an hour, walking up and down and talking quickly and without pause about a new idea he’s got. He explained (in some detail) that the Battle Rock is to be the base for a new music recording and photographic portrait project, the outcome of which will be recordings of some beautiful songs by London based solo musicians alongside a set of striking portrait photos.

Whilst the wild look in his eyes as he talked was somewhat distracting, we managed to jot down a couple of key themes:

  • the project is aimed at all musicians from all musical backgrounds;
  • the main requirement is that you can sing / deliver a song which you are proud of and it is yours to sing (i.e. you wrote it and/or have permission to use and record the song);
  • most songs will be recorded “live” (in Dalston) with as many mics as needed, but time permitting we can use other methods too;
  • we may not be able to record every song as we have limited resources and so there may be auditions somewhere central to enable us to meet each other, built up some trust and to better understand what we want to achieve before the recordings and the photos;
  • the photographs will be taken by our photographer  (www.markhucksphotography.com) at locations to be agreed between him and the individual musicians as part of a linked photography project;
  • once finished, a collection of the best songs will be put online (most likely Bandcamp) and made available to download, alongside links to a photo of each the singers involved;
  • this is not a commercial venture, but it is an opportunity to get a good quality recording of a song and to be part of a musical and photographic project – in the event (and at our discretion) any money is made from downloads of individual songs, it will be split three ways between the musician, us and a charity of our choice (musicians are encouraged to comment on any suggestions that they may have);
  • during the project, we’ll be encouraging musicians to meet up and share ideas so it’s a way of meeting other musicians in London and perhaps working together in future.
